Why & How of Goal Setting
Adding HEART to Your SMART Goals
The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.
Ever wonder why some people seem to effortlessly achieve their goals, while others struggle to get started? The secret lies not just in what you want to achieve, but in why you want to achieve it. Purpose is the driving force behind our ambitions, providing the motivation to pursue them. However, between purpose and achievement lies a crucial step: setting the right goals.
A goal is the target we aim for, while purpose is the reason behind that aim. Whether you want to conquer a new language, prioritize work-life balance, or simply dedicate more time to family, these are all worthy aspirations. But how do we bridge the gap between desire and achievement? The key is effective goal-setting.
The SMART Approach
We all have goals, but often the path to achieving them feels unclear. Enter SMART goals, a popular framework introduced by Jim Kwik in his book Limitless. This method injects structure into our aspirations, ensuring they are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. These qualities help make our goals well-defined, trackable, and attainable within a set timeframe.
Specific: Your goal should be well-defined. Don’t say you want to be rich; say you want to make a certain amount of money.
Measurable: If you can’t measure your goal, you can’t manage it. Getting fit isn’t measurable—running a six-minute mile is.
Actionable: Develop the action steps to achieve your goal. You wouldn’t drive to a new town without asking for directions.
Realistic: Your goals should challenge and stretch you, but not so much that you give up on them. If you’re living in your parents’ basement, it’s hard to become a millionaire.
Time-based: Setting a time to complete your goal makes you that much more likely to reach it. The phrase “A goal is a dream with a deadline” comes to mind.
Aligning Goals with Your HEART
SMART goals are powerful, but they can feel impersonal. That's where HEART goals come in. HEART injects emotion and purpose into your goals, making them more engaging and sustainable.
Healthy: Ensure your goals contribute to your well-being. Focus on goals that make you feel good, not depleted.
Enduring: Choose goals that inspire you, even when faced with challenges.
Alluring: Make your goals exciting! Goals that spark joy and a sense of accomplishment are more likely to be pursued.
Relevant: Connect your goals to your core values and purpose. Goals that resonate with your deeper desires have a stronger pull.
Truthful: Pursue goals that are authentic to you, not ones dictated by others.
